Day Zero: A Little Challenge Before I Start

Well, before I start my journey I thought it would be good to have a baseline that I can measure my progress against.

I thought that I would measure my pronunciation and comprehension, and mark the amount of time I am committing to study.

Pronunciation and Comprehension

Rummaging through the files I have collected over the years I cam across a bilingual e-book of Cebuano folk tales which presents a series of very short stories with accompanying English translation. I thought this would be a good text to read, as they are short and self-contained.

Here is the result of my first reading. It took me five minutes to read four paragraphs and I only understood two words from the whole of the text!

As well as reading, I also think it will be helpful to listen to audio. I came across an interesting podcast called 'Barok and Takya's Bisaya Podcast' in which two people chat about different subjects in Cebuano. I listened to the third episode about childhood games. I picked out a couple of names of games and odd words, but didn't understand any of the conversations at all. It will be good to revisit the same episode in future to mark my progress.

Time Commitment

Finally, as I give progress updates, I'll let you know how many hours I have spent learning and break it down as much as possible to keep track. Only 1,100 hours to go! ha ha

One thing that I hope is that the bits and bobs of learning I have done over the past few years will come back to me, and that all the subconscious listening I must have been doing around my partner will come in useful.

If you're learning alongside me, I look forward to hearing your progress, otherwise wish me luck!
